Happy Diamond Annivesarty To The Atlanta Dogwood Festival

HAPPY DIAMOND ANNIVESARTY TO THE ATLANTA DOGWOOD FESTIVAL
An Event 75 Years in the Making

Atlanta, Georgia (October 28, 2010) – It’s been 75 years since Walter Rich, of Rich’s Department stores, decided to inaugurate a festival to celebrate the beautiful spring season in Atlanta. Since 1936, the festival has gone through numerous changes, and today the Atlanta Dogwood Festival holds the honor of being the third oldest fine arts festival in the country. With nearly 300 artists each year from throughout the United States and Canada, the Atlanta Dogwood Festival also provides a full weekend of live entertainment, varied food selections and a beloved disc dog competition. In more recent years, the festival has expanded its offerings to include an international cultural component, comedy and theatre partnerships and a gourmet tasting area featuring some of the city’s best restaurants.

It’s an event 75 years in the making, and the 2011 Atlanta Dogwood Festival promises more excitement than ever under the blooming of the city’s most beautiful trees.

AT A GLANCE
The 75th Annual Atlanta Dogwood Festival takes place in Atlanta’s beautiful Piedmont Park on April 15, 16 and 17, 2011. Festival attendance is free, although a few of the areas are ticketed. www.dogwood.org

ARTS
The 2011 Atlanta Dogwood Festival Artist Market welcomes fine artists from throughout the country and includes a special section featuring Georgia artists. All types of art are represented within the Artist Market, from oil painting to jewelry to sculpture and textiles. There is plenty to tempt any collector!

Again this year, the Atlanta Dogwood Festival is particularly proud of its Atlanta High School Art Exhibition (AHSAE), which last year brought in nearly 600 entries from talented young artists throughout the metro-area. Providing winners with $30,000 in scholarships and supplies, the AHSAE is community-oriented feature of the festival that fills a growing gap in creative opportunities for youth. Held in the Community Center in Piedmont Park during the festival, the AHSAE highlights the variety and breadth of young Atlanta artistic talent.

GLOBAL
The Atlanta Dogwood Festival kicked off the International Village two years ago to recognize and celebrate the city’s diverse international communities. With the International Stage hosting a multitude of cultural performances from around the globe, the edutainment booths and the decorated mobile art golf carts, the International Village quickly became a favorite feature of the festival. The international communities and globally minded guests are also welcomed to make merry during La Fête, an evening ticketed party held on Friday, April 15 to launch the 2011 International Village.

SPECTATORS
Each year, the Atlanta Dogwood Festival offers entertainment throughout the weekend. As always, two live music stages feature performers from a variety of musical genres. Festival attendees can also enjoy the popular live disc dog show on the lawn or head to one of the other entertainment choices like theater productions and kid-friendly street performances.

FOR FOODIES
The “Friends of Dogwood Pavilion,” a ticketed event that has become a popular feature of the Atlanta Dogwood Festival, will be open Saturday and Sunday. The Pavilion pairs fare from top local restaurants with wines and beers in a comfortable, private setting. Tickets to Friends of Dogwood can be purchased in advance beginning in the spring at www.dogwood.org.

KIDS
Designed just for the younger festival visitors, the Kid’s Village has become an Atlanta Dogwood Festival favorite for families. This interactive zone comes complete with hands-on art projects, special kid-friendly displays and hours of entertainment for children. With anything from ropes courses to the popular spider jump, parents will find this area ideal for pulling up some grass while the kiddies let out some energy.

ENTRANCE
Just as it has been for the past 74 years, the 75th Annual Atlanta Dogwood Festival is free!

FUNDRAISING
As a registered 501-C3, the Atlanta Dogwood Festival thanks Friends of Dogwood and our sponsors who help keep this great event free and open to the public.

Additional neighborhood and community-oriented features will be part of the 75th Atlanta Dogwood Festival – details coming soon!

Winners of new graduate art award announced.

Bow Arts Trust is delighted to announce the two winners of the inaugural Bow Arts Trust Graduate Residency Award. Recent arts graduates Sophie Hoyle and Chloe Ostmo have been awarded a receive a free artist’s studio each for six months at the Trust’s newly opened SE1 studios, in south London.  SE1 Studios, in Bermondsey, are the result of an exciting new partnership between Bow Arts Trust and Crisis, the national charity for single homeless people.

The Bow Arts Trust Graduate Residency Award was launched this year to provide vital support for young and emerging artists. In addition to receiving a rent-free studio space for six months, the two Award winners will also be featured on the London’s Artist Quarter website which promotes artists and cultural activity in East London.  Both artists will be posting regular updates about their progress throughout their residencies.

The Award aims to help emerging artists navigate the difficult transition from art student to practicing professional by easing the substantial financial pressures that artists face. Marcel Baettig, Chief Executive of Bow Arts Trust, says that “Having supported emerging artists for more than fifteen years, I am all too aware that financial and practical difficulties that can often stop artists from developing their artistic careers. At the Trust, we wanted to provide some tangible support – and a fundamental thing that an artist needs is a space in which to think, work and make!”

The Award was open to any 2009 or 2010 graduate who studied a creative subject at a UK institution at degree or postgraduate level. The Trust received more than 140 applications from graduates from a diverse range of creative backgrounds, from pottery to performance art.  The winners were chosen by Marcel Baettig (Chief Executive of Bow Arts Trust), Myriam Blundell (Bow Arts Trust Trustee, independent art curator and Chair of the International Collectors Forum at the Contemporary Art Society) and Sarah Elson, art historian, curator and collector.

The two winners have now taken up residence in their studios at SE1 and work is underway. Sophie Hoyle studied for a Postgraduate Diploma in Fine Art at Central St Martins School of Art and Design (2010) and works primarily with printmaking and sculptural installation. Sophie says that “a studio space is an indispensable part of my working process; I am still experimenting and developing, and need space to work out my ideas. It was very encouraging to have Bow Arts Trust support me and my practice.”

Chloe Ostmo (MA in Fine Art, Slade School of Fine Art, 2010) focuses on the manipulation and re-interpretation of photographic imagery. Chloe explains that “being part of a studio community allows me to have regular contact with other artists. This is hugely beneficial both in terms of the development of my work and as a way to discover and distribute information regarding exhibitions, resources and opportunities.”

SE1 Studios opened in summer 2010 near London Bridge and Bermondsey tube stations. The spaces have been designed with new and emerging artists specifically in mind. These studios have been made possible through a partnership with the national charity for single homeless people, Crisis. By launching these new studios, Bow Arts Trust is extending its direct support to emerging artists at a critical, and often difficult, point in their careers.  Michael Cubey, Head of Property and Assistant Director of Bow Arts Trust, explains that “by making very affordable spaces available, which by their design encourage interaction and networking between peers, we are enabling emerging artists to maximise their time and establish creative communities”.

The relationship between Bow Arts Trust and Crisis builds on the successful partnership model of working that the Trust has developed with housing associations in East London.  This model enables the Trust to find innovative and sustainable solutions for premises and provide real community benefit for the local area.  Two artists belonging to the Crisis Skylight scheme will also be selected to receive free studios in SE1 Studios for one year.

Marcel Baettig explains that “it’s always been hard for emerging artists to establish themselves but now, more than ever, it is crucial that we continue to nurture young talent. Graduates are completing their studies and attempting to break into a creative sector that is highly competitive and undergoing tough cutbacks. If we want the UK to continue producing exciting, challenging, world-class artists, we need to ensure that opportunities and resources are in place to enable new artists to thrive.”

End.

Editors notes:

If you require high res images, more information or would like to interview Marcel Baettig, Sophie Hoyle or Chloe Ostmo about this story, please contact Nadine Ishani, Marketing Officer, Bow Arts Trust.

Bow Arts Trust was established as an educational arts charity in 1995 and is situated adjacent to the historic St Mary Atta le Bow Church in the East End of London, where it supports a community of over 100 artists with affordable, secure, creative workspace in the heart of London’s Artist Quarter.  The Trust also manages one of the country’s most exciting education projects and the Nunnery gallery which supports a diverse range of local, national and international exhibitions and events.  The Trust is not subsidised but works closely with a number of partners including Poplar HARCA and East Thames. In summer 2010 the company expanded into South London, with 60 new studio spaces. http://www.bowarts.org

Crisis is the national charity for single homeless people. It is dedicated to ending homelessness by delivering life-changing services and campaigning for change. Innovative education, employment, housing and well-being services address individual needs and help people to transform their lives. Crisis works to prevent people from becoming homeless through campaigning and advocating solutions informed by research and direct experience. The charity has ambitious plans for the future and is committed to helping more people in more places across the UK. Crisis knows it won’t end homelessness overnight or on its own, but takes a lead and, through collaboration with others, makes change happen.

Celebrated Ceramic Artist from South Africa Visits St. Petersburg

Fee Halsted is being honored for her role in empowering women and uplifting their lives in South Africa. She will receive her honor from Women’s Campaign International at their annual fund-raising event in New York on November 30th, ‘All the Difference in the World’. For the past twelve years, WCI has helped women find their voices by giving them tangible skills in twenty countries around the world. WCI honors individuals who have made exceptional contributions to women’s rights and past honorees include musician John Legend, Vice President Joe Biden, and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Fee has been fostering artistic talent in a remote area of KwaZulu Natal for the last 25 years and many South African women have been trained as decorators of her distinctive designs. Each piece of Ardmore ceramic art is individually modeled and hand-painted by Zulu artists, who have become renowned for their exuberant use of color and their vivacious modeling of flora and fauna. Leopards, zebras, giraffes, hyenas and monkeys burst with life from luxuriant foliage to form quirky and humorous vases, candlesticks, tureens or teapots

The Ardmore artists battle diseases such as HIV/Aids and the sale of each piece helps improve the quality of life in their rural community.  Fortunately this original and unique South African pottery has become very collectible in recent years with specialist sales at Christie’s of London and Sotheby’s in Johannesburg.  An heir to the Coca Cola fortune has collected over 700 pieces and museums from New York to Zurich have acquired examples of Ardmore Ceramic Art. Queen Elizabeth II was recently presented with a piece of Ardmore by the President of South Africa and there is also an Ardmore masterpiece in the White House.

Fee will be signing purchases of Ardmore Ceramic Art at the Pascoe and Company celebration weekend on December 4 & 5, Sat 1pm to 6pm & Sun 10am to 4pm. Come and meet this remarkable lady and enjoy a wonderful celebration of ceramic art.

Lake Forest Chiropractor Offers Free Treatment in Return for Donation to Food Drive

Dr. Scott Neubauer, a chiropractor and Active Release Technique expert in South Orange County, announced earlier this week a food drive to help the needy of Orange County. Standing before assembled media and friends of the clinic, Dr. Neubauer stated that “more now than any other time in my life do my friends and neighbors need help.”

What he is doing is offering a free exam and treatment in exchange for 10 canned food items on November 10. He calls it “10 on the 10th”. The details are any person can schedule an appointment for the November 10, on that date bring along 10 food items and the visit will be free of charge. “Just call our office at 949-933-7789 and tell them that you want to schedule for the 10 on the 10th.”

Dr. Scott, as he is known, continued that the idea for a food drive occurred one evening while discussing the plight of friend in need.  ”My friend has always been a hard worker and always has had a job. But the past year has been terrible for him. He’s had a hard time feeding his family.” Dr. Scott stated that while he has been able to help his friend, he knows that there are many more in need.

Enter Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County. A privately funded philanthropic organization that works hand-in-hand with local governmental agencies, Second Harvest tells us that “one in five Orange County residents struggles with hunger” regularly.

“I am realistic,” continued Dr. Scott. “I know that I can’t help everyone. I’m hoping to help some and may inspire others to do similarly.” Dr. Scott tells us that so far the response has been great, and that he expects to work “at least 13 hours on the 10th”.

About Second Harvest
Under the guidance of the Council of Orange, Society of St. Vincent de Paul, the Food Bank began providing food for the hungry in October 1983. Since 1983, the Food Bank has provided more than 260 million pounds of donated and surplus food to local charities. Read more about them at: http://feedoc.org/
